Girls Hockey: Cards rally past Austin to win own tournament

WILLMAR -- The Willmar Cardinals cut it close the second day in a row to win its own Thanksgiving Classic at the Civic Center Saturday.

After coming from behind in the third period on Friday to beat Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato 2-1, the Cardinals came from down 1-0 after one period to dispatch Austin 4-3 with a goal late in the third period.

Eighth-grader Riley Schneider scored her second goal of the game to break a 3-3 tie with 3:08 left on the clock.

Willmar had gone up 3-2 with a trio of goals in the middle stanza by Shelby Schneider, Riley Schneider and Alex Sobieck.

At the other end, Cardinal goalie Madison Sandberg faced 44 shots and rejected 41 of those.

Austin (1-3) was led again by senior center Carley Grunewald who scored once in each period to finish the tournament with 12 points (7 goals, 5 assists).

Willmar (3-1) remains close to home this week hosting the Hutchinson Tigers on Tuesday and then returning to Central Lakes Conference play against the Sartell Sabres on Thursday at the Cardinal Arena.

Six different players scored for the Dragons, who picked up their first victory. Ali McGraw, Teegan Wyffels and Kennedy Sommerfield each scored twice.

Lauren Knisley contributed a goal and four helpers for LDC.

Morris/Benson Area broke up the shutout on a shot by Emily Walz from the top of the left circle with 16 seconds left with an assist to Morgan DeHaan.

The Storm (0-4), who have only one senior and two juniors skating, were outshot 42-7. The youthful team lost 10-0 on Friday to Austin.
