State Swimming: Shuldes qualifies for state final
MINNEAPOLIS — Willmar junior Garrett Shuldes advanced to today's Class A 50 freestyle final at the Minnesota State Swimming and Diving Championships during Friday's preliminaries at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.
Willmar swimmers competed in four other events on Friday but did not qualify for today's finals.
Shuldes finished in 22.06 seconds to place 11th in prelims. The top 16 competitors in prelims advance to finals. Mankato East's Jacob Long had to top qualifying time of 21.06.
Shuldes placed 25th in the 100 freestyle in 49.61. Benilde-St. Margaret's Tyler Metz was the top qualifier in 46.92.
Willmar's 200 medley relay team of Shuldes, seniors Nash VanKlompenburg and Ryan Kuchta and sophomore Mateo Marin-Mera swam a 1:41.86 to place 18th. The same team was 23rd in 2016 state prelims. Orono had the top qualifying time of 1:34.51.
In the 100 backstroke, VanKlompenburg swan a 58.63 to place 19th. Orono's Will Brenton was the top qualifier in 49.51.
Kuchta place 21st in the 100 breaksstroke in 1:05.94. Alexandria's Nic Chromey is chasing a state championship, finishing as Friday's top qualifier in 57.43.
The Class A swimming championships begin at noon today at the Aquatic Center.
