State Swimming: Shuldes 13th in 50 freestyle final

MINNEAPOLIS — Willmar junior Garrett Shuldes tied for 13th in the Class A 50 freestyle final at the Minnesota State Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.

Shuldes and Breck/Blake's Julian Frerichs both finished in 22.09 seconds. Faribault's Paul Sadergaski won the event in 21.00.

Willmar swimmers competed in four preliminary events on Friday but did not qualify for Saturday's finals. The top 16 competitors in Friday's prelims advanced to the finals

Shuldes finished in 22.06 seconds to place 11th in prelims. Shuldes placed 25th in the 100 freestyle in 49.61. Benilde-St. Margaret's Tyler Metz was the top qualifier in 46.92.

Also in Friday's prelims, Willmar's 200 medley relay team of Shuldes, seniors Nash VanKlompenburg and Ryan Kuchta and sophomore Mateo Marin-Mera swam a 1:41.86 to place 18th. The same team was 23rd in 2016 state prelims.

In the 100 backstroke, VanKlompenburg swan a 58.63 to place 19th.

Kuchta place 21st in the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.94. Alexandria's Nic Chromey won the 100 breaststroke championship on Saturday in 57.34.
