RU Game: Hanson, Rudie commit to D-I schools
Cross country runners Jessa Hanson and Kayla Rudie are the newest Willmar athletes to commit to NCAA Division I athletic programs as they declared for Northern Arizona University and Lipscomb University, respectively.
Hanson and Rudie helped lead the Cardinals to a second-place finish at the Class AA state tournament last fall and round out a strong senior class of Division I commits. Teammate Sophie Schmitz (University of Minnesota) also plans to run collegiately.
Hanson was the top Cardinal finisher at the state tournament in the fall. She finished in fourth place in 18:35.2. Rudie wasn't far behind, finishing in eighth place at 18:51.9.
Former WarHawk commits to Lawrence
Former Willmar WarHawk Jacob Dobberstein committed to Lawrence University, a Division III program in Appleton, Wisconsin.
Dobberstein, a Chelsea, Michigan native, posted the third-most points for the WarHawks in their inaugural season with 36. He finished with 15 goals and 21 assists in 45 games played.
"Jacob quickly established himself not only as a top-end player but a leader who was looked upon by his teammates to lead the way both on the ice and off the ice," Willmar WarHawks head coach Chris Blaisuis said. "The WarHawks organization is extremely proud of Jacob. Lawrence University is getting not just a good hockey player but an even better person and leader.'
Dobberstein will look to play meaningful shifts right away for a Vikings team that went 6-16-3 during the 2016-2017 season.
