Local Roundup: 'Cats big inning sends Stingers to defeat

WILLMAR - The Willmar Stingers surrendered a three-run lead in a big way, with Thunder Bay scoring six runs in the fifth inning and riding a strong effort from the Border Cat relief corps to win 7-5 on Sunday at Bill Taunton Stadium.

Colin Rosenbaum homered and drove in three runs for the Border Cats.

Willmar's Josh Bissonette had a hit and drove in two runs and Tyler Reichenborn and Luke Becker also had hits and drove in runs. Caleb Ledbetter that 2-for-3 with a double.

The Stingers wrap up a two-game set against the Border Cats at 7:30 p.m. today at Taunton.

Pitching carried the day and Nolan Bumstead homered and drove in four runs in the Stingers' victory over the MoonDogs on Saturday at Bill Taunton Stadium in Willmar.

Starter Polo Portela allowed Toby Hanson's solo home run in the first and that was in the Mankato. Portela got the win, working 5-2/3 innings and surrendering just three hits. Connor Jahn allowed a hit and struck out two in 1-1/3 innings and Calvin Coker walked one and struck out four in two innings.

Bumstead had three hits and also scored twice, Brady Shockey had three hits and Caleb Ledbetter and Eli Wilson both had RBIs.

Willmar scored four first-inning runs, thanks primarily to four straight walks and Blake VanDenEinde's two-run single. They added three more runs in the fourth.

Zak Madsen worked a complete game, allowing two hits and striking out four.

Post 167 won its second game of the Albany Wood Bat Tournament behind Tyler Johnson's four-hit pitching and his bat on Saturday in Avon.

Johnson allowed just one walk and struck out seven.

Willmar scored all its runs in the fifth inning. Garrit Kooistra singled to lead off the inning and Brayden Sunder doubled with one out. Sam Vreeman walked and Johnson drove in two runs with a single. Vreeman then scored the third run of the inning on a balk.

Dierenfeld fired a five-hitter, allowing just one walk while striking out nine.

Drey Dirksen tripled and drove in two runs and Caleb Owens had a hit and scored twice. Dierenfeld also drove in a run and scored a run.
