Local Roundup: WarHawks lose lead, game

The Willmar WarHawks led 4-2 through the first two periods of Friday night's game against West Division foes Granite City but the Lumberjacks showed their championship-level moxie with four third period goals to win 6-4.

The Lumberjacks, who are the reigning NA3HL Silver Cup champions, scored four unanswered goals on 12 third period shots to complete the comeback against the WarHawks.

Willmar played well early on, scoring a pair of goals in the opening period thanks to shots from Keegan Bauman 6:07 into the game and Jacob Berkowitz at the 18:17 mark. Berkowitz added another in the second period, his fourth of the season after assists from Peyton Bolstad and Riley Dixon.

It was Redwood Valley graduate Bailey Sommers who started the comeback for the Lumberjacks, netting his fourth goal of the season just 2:56 into the third period. Teammates Jake Van Halbeck, Brandon Bissett and Braden Altena responded in kind with goals of their own to give the game the 6-4 final. Van Halbeck finished the game with two goals and an assist at the Armadillo Deck Sports Arena in Sauk Rapids. Granite City finished the game with a 40-24 advantage in shots over the WarHawks.

Willmar will look to avenge the loss in Saturday's home opener against Granite City. Puck drops at 7:30 p.m. at the Willmar Civic Center.
