Local Roundup: NLS girls hoops team wins battle of ranked teams

EDEN VALLEY - Right before the calendar flipped to December, the basketball gods gave their followers a top-ten battle between No. 4 Eden Valley-Watkins and No. 9 New London-Spicer, and it didn't disappoint.

The young Wildcats proved they could hang with the big teams with a 48-41 victory over the Eagles.

"(Our team) kept battling," said NLS head coach Mike Dreier. "It was a nice win for (our players). It proved they can compete with the better teams around."

Mackenzie Rich finished with a team-high 11 points, just ahead of Erin Knisley's 10. Knisley also tied teammate Grace DeSchepper with six rebounds.

The Wildcat defense was able to keep most of the Eagles in check, forcing bad shots with plenty of misses. Olivia Kuechle led all scorers with 14 points.

The Wildcats are now 2-0 with the first big test of the season out of the way.

"It's really a big win for our team with all the young kids," Dreier said.
