Prep Basketball: BOLD girls cruise to win over Lakers

OLIVIA — The recipe for success was simple for the BOLD girls basketball team on Thursday night against Minnewaska.

Fast breaks and a fast start.

The Warriors followed that plan, jumping out to a big lead early in the first half and cruising to a 65-43 win over the Lakers at BOLD High School.

Known for its suffocating full-court press, the Warriors came out with a half-court defense that proved just as decimating, allowing just three points in the first 11 minutes of play.

"We came out with a little twist. I was really proud of how the girls played defense and rebounded in that first half," BOLD head coach Brian Kingery said.

In that time, Makenna Steffel worked her magic in transition, scoring 13 points as BOLD opened the game on a 25-3 run.

From there, the Lakers showed why they're still a team with a plus-.500 record, playing the Warriors evenly on the scoreboard. BOLD increased its lead to 35 points in the second half, but Minnewaska finished by out-scoring the Warriors by two points in the final 18 minutes.

Steffel finished with 30 points, 10 rebounds and six steals. Five Warriors grabbed seven or more rebounds on the night.

"They didn't shoot very well in the first half, and a large part of that was we were rebounding really well," Kingery said. "That's our Achilles' heel sometimes. We like to get out and run a lot, so sometimes our guards will leak out. Tonight the focus was to not give up offensive rebounds and it worked well."

Rachel Erickson and Ellie Danielson each tallied nine points to lead the Lakers.
