Girls basketball roundup: New Prague ends Willmar's season

ST. PETER — After an impressive victory to open the Section 2AAA playoffs, the Willmar Cardinals girls basketball team went down hard to New Prague, 66-41, on Saturday at Gustavus Adolphus College.

The No. 4-seed Cardinals fell behind by 14 at halftime and couldn’t get into a flow offensively.

“This was a tough geam to send our seniors out on,” said Willmar head coach Dustin Carlson. “New Prague played tough pressure defense and we couldn’t get our offense in rhythm.

Willmar finished 12-15 overall but was 3-9 in its last 12 games. New Prague, the section’s top seed, is 21-6 and plays Mankato East for the section title on Thursday.

Courtney Magnuson led the Cardinals with 16 points and Kalley Fosso finished with 7 point and 5 rebounds.

Anne Dunham led the Cards with 7 boards, 3 assists and 3 blocked shots.

Annie Dittburner and Maize Deihl combined to score 32 points.

“It’s hard to imagine the season is over already,” Carlson said. “It’s very tough and emotional to say goodbye to our three seniors (Dunham, Kassy Linbo and Heather Horning). They are three truly great kids that I couldn’t be more proud of. We are sure going to miss them.”
