Tigers pass early-season test

NEW LONDON — Riley Marty put in some work on her birthday.

With balloons and a homemade sign paying homage to the 17-year-old, the Morris/Chokio-Alberta senior outside hitter came up with a team-high 11 kills with eight digs and an ace serve in a three-set victory at New London-Spicer Tuesday, 25-23, 25-20, 25-21.

What was in store for the rest of the birthday girl's night?

"Go home, eat a little bit and go to bed," Marty said. And cake? "I hope so. ... Chocolate's my favorite."

A solid early-season win against a Section 3AA-North foe was cause for celebration for the rest of the Tigers' squad. And it all started with MACA's ability to set the offense up thanks to its back-row passing.

"It all starts with serve-receive. We really rely on Bailey Marty and Riley Decker to get the ball in the air for us," said Tigers head coach Caleb Greene.

The host Wildcats were scrappy throughout, fighting off a 22-15, first-set deficit, tying the second set at 19-19, and staying within two points at the tail end of the third set.

Leading that effort at the net was sophomore right-side hitter Ashlyn Olson.

"When she gets set up, she's tough to stop," said NLS head coach Erin Schoumaker. "She's got a lot of different shots in her tool box. She can go wherever she wants and she gets up so high that even the block doesn't deter her a lot of the time. If we can get a pass so we can set her up, it's almost a guaranteed point."

Ultimately, unforced errors and struggles at the service line held NLS back from extending the match beyond the third set.

"We missed way too much from the serving line tonight," Schoumaker said. "That's something that's got to be cleaned up.

"And we have to play better defense. I felt like our offense was pretty on-point, which is what kept us in it. But we definitely had to play better defense and be better serving."

On MACA's end, the errors were kept to a minimum and the attack was balanced with Alexis Pew coming down with eight kills and Kenzie Hockel tallying seven.

"I didn't want to bail them out with any timeouts," Greene said of his players. "I wanted to see how they could respond to one another because a lot of these girls don't have varsity experience. The more they can feed off of one another, the better."

From the outside, Marty was able to find success against NLS's defense with cross-court shots. While Greene praised Marty's athleticism and her "ability to make impossible plays seem possible," Marty said a keen ear helped her on the court tonight.

"Our bench is really good at telling us where to go," Marty said. "They tell us open spots and everything."

Decker anchored the Tigers' defense with nine digs, and LaRae Kram and Sophia Carlsen each protected the net with two ace blocks apiece.

MACA returns home Thursday for a West Central Conference match with Montevideo while NLS is on the road on Sept. 4 to face Paynesville.
