College softball: Ridgewater splits doubleheader in Florida finale

COCOA BEACH, Fla. — Ridgewater ended its annual southern trek to Florida Monday by splitting a pair of games for the third straight day.

The Warriors held on to beat MCAC rival Itasca 3-2 to open play Monday morning before getting 10-run ruled by NJCAA Division II power Heartland Community College (Ill.) 12-2 in 4½ innings.

No Warrior had more than one hit in a game, but getting a hit in each game were Kari Shipman, Jessie Kalenberg, Brielle Hauge and Dani Emkes.

Kalenberg knocked in a run in each game — a fielder’s choice against Itasca and a single against Heartland — and Hauge added an RBI double against Heartland, which led 9-0 after two innings. Brooke Carlson singled in a run in the opener, where Ridgewater scored all three of its runs in the third inning to avenge an 8-5 loss to the Vikings on Saturday.

Nissen worked all seven innings in the circle against Itasca to earn a complete-game win, surrendering six hits and just two walks and no earned runs. Kalenberg was tagged with the loss against Heartland after giving up 11 hits in four innings of work.

“To go 3-3 down here is a good thing and we’re happy with that,” said Warriors coach Todd Thorstad. “We look at it as two of the losses are against teams that we can beat sometime down the road and another one was against a team that has played in the Division II title game the last two years.”

Ridgewater will have 10 days off until resuming play on March 22 in Rosemount at the Irish Sports Dome for three games against fellow MCAC members Fond du Lac, Minnesota West and Rainy River.
