Willmar Curling Club out to make most in first national

WILLMAR — The Willmar Curling Club will be hosting the 2013 USA Mixed National Curling Championship at the Civic Center’s Blue Line Arena for eight days starting this Saturday.

Ten regions of the country will be represented at the championship tournament.

The U.S. Curling Association event will feature up to three draws a day of worldclass curling action for seven days and nights.

All event admissions are provided free by the Willmar Curling Club, major sponsor Snap Fitness, and several other local sponsors.

Curling is a relatively small sport that is growing rapidly in the U.S. and worldwide, thanks largely to curling’s popularity as a winter Olympic sport. The Willmar Curling Club considers this an excellent opportunity to once again promote the sport of curling and expose more people to it.

Important goals for the club to grow into the future are a dedicated facility, strong programs for youth, seniors, and people with disabilities, and to perhaps have an Olympic athlete hailing from the Willmar Curling Club.

The Willmar Curling Club also believes that introducing our community to the world of curling as a viable hosting site for future curling events is an important step for the community in the future, as there are many curling events at the regional, state, national and even world level .

The event will feature approximately 50 hours of curling action during the weeklong event. The WCC will be providing educational materials to help spectators learn and better understand the sport. There will also be volunteers, curling fans and WCC members present who will talk about curling with people interested in learning more about it.

The Willmar Curling Club is a nonprofit organization dedicated to facilitating and promoting the sport of curling. Curling is a competitive Olympic sport, as well as an inter-generational lifetime recreation for all ages.

The WCC has two annual bonspiels (tournaments), an open house and banquet every season and occasional state or national events like the U.S. Mixed Nationals coming in March; all in the effort to continue to promote the sport of curling. The organization also facilitates weekly curling programs like WCER Saturday open curling and youth curling, adaptive and senior curling on Thursdays, and three adult recreational leagues on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
