Prep Baseball: Monte edges Pipestone at Metrodome in season opener

MINNEAPOLIS — Zach Enevoldsen and Ricky Schmitz both drove in runs and Schmitz scored an insurance run on a wild pitch as Montevideo opened its prep baseball season with a 3-1 win over Pipestone on Saturday at the Metrodome.

“Well, we got a game in,” said Thunder Hawks head coach Tim Epema.

The T-Hawks’ Jordan Thompson, Jeff Rohloff and Jake Bednar combined to one-hit Pipestone, which scored an unearned run in the fifth.

In the fourth inning of a scoreless game, Thompson singled and scored on Enevoldsen’s triple. Schmitz followed with a single to drive in Enevoldsen.

In the sixth, leading by a run, Monte scored again when Schmitz and Josh Henderson both walked and advanced on a ground out. Schmitz then scored on a wild pitch.

The T-Hawks are scheduled to play Sauk Centre at home on Tuesday but it doesn’t appear likely the game will be played. Weather conditions today and Tuesday are not expected to be good and Montevideo’s field still has considerable snow in parts of the outfield, Epema said.
