Stingers notebook: Thomson mowing down the competition

WILLMAR — Scottsdale Community College’s Colton Thomson has more strikeouts this season than points on his ERA.

The lefthander out of Mesa, Ariz., who is signed to play for the Stingers this summer, has 95 strikeouts and a 0.86 ERA in 73 innings for Scottsdale. He has been one of the best starters in NJCAA Division II this season, leading all of D-II in strikeouts and is fifth in ERA. He’s allowed seven total earned runs in nine starts and hasn’t given up a home run all year.

Scottsdale head coach Alex Cherney said Thomson throws 86-88 mph and is good at working in and out and changing speeds.

“Colton has great run on his fastball and changeup,” Cherney said. “He has great command of his off-speed pitches and has really located well.”

- Max Kuhn and the Kentucky Wildcats dropped out of the Top 25 rankings this week. They were ranked No. 17 last week and had been as high as No. 7 this season.

- Thomas Taylor (Kansas) struck out five on April 19 to push his career strikeout total to 220 and a fifth-place tie on the Jayhawks’ all-time list.

- Dillon Haupt (San Diego) hit an 11th-inning, walk-off home run to lift the Toreros over UC-Riverside on April 23.
