Boys Tennis: Strong play in singles not enough for Willmar

(Tribune photo by Rand Middleton) Isaac Yoakum was mobile from the baseline on Saturday to pick up his third straight win at No. 3 singles but Willmar fell to visiting Alexandria 4-3.

WILLMAR — Alexandria swept doubles to overcome Willmar’s advantage at singles and register a 4-3 Central Lakes Conference win in boys tennis on Saturday at the sun-splashed high school courts.

The visiting Cardinals lost only nine games while ruling the pairs competition in straight sets.

Preston Peterson, Drew Corneil and Isaac Yoakum took points at 1-2-3 singles, respectively, for the home-town Cardinals.

Willmar (1-2) maintains its frantic pace since its season debut on Thursday: home today against a ranked Fergus Falls team, at Alexandria on Tuesday, home vs. powerhouse St. Cloud Tech on Wednesday and a twin bill on Thursday at St. Cloud Apollo and at Sartell.
