Prep Softball: Willmar 1-1 at Monticello Invite

MONTICELLO — The Willmar softball team split a pair of games on Saturday at the Monticello tournament.

The Cardinals fell 12-4 to Norwood Young America but rebounded to defeat Sartell 8-7 with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Against Sartell, the Cardinals led 7-4 before the Sabres rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Cardinals’ Ali Roehl reached on a bunt single, stole second based and advanced to third on a Leah Ruter’s ground out.

With Sarah Stadem at bat, a pitch glanced off the Sabres’ catcher’s mitt and bounced away, allowing Roehl to score the winning run.

Megan Rudnick homered for the Cardinals and McKenzie Hastad doubled and drove in a run. Jordan Martins was 2-for-4, and Roehl and Eli Steinessen both had hits.

Ruter picked up the win.

Against Norwood Young America, Hastad and Rudnick both had two hits and each drove in runs.

The Cardinals (1-2) host Alexandria in a doubleheader Tuesday at 4 p.m.
