Morris/CA easily wins own tournament

MORRIS — McKenzie VanBatavia struck out 21 in 17 innings of work and gave up just one earned run Saturday to help Morris/Chokio-Alberta win three games at its home tournament.

The Tigers, who opened their season Saturday, toppled both West Central Area and Wheaton/Herman-Norcross 11-1 to reach the championship game where they then stymied St. Cloud Apollo 6-1.

Pacing the MCA offense with Becca Holland’s five hits, while Brooke Johnson added four hits and VanBatavia, Chelsey Ehleringer and Sadie Fischer each had another three.

MACCRAY fell three times, losing 12-9 to Wheaton/Herman-Norcross, 14-6 to West Central Area, and 8-4 to Ortonville.

Laura Hauser led the Wolverines’ offense with a home run and two RBIs, and Molly Friese and Rachel Davids both had three hits. Davids and Becka Timpling also drove in two runs.

ACGC won two of three games on Saturday, losing 12-1 to St. Cloud Apollo before defeating Ortonville 6-5 and West Central Area 13-5.

Erica Melbie was 5-for-8, including a homer and a double, and drove in 3 runs, and Kelsey Kramer was 4-for-10 and drove in a pair of runs. Natasha Dallmann drove in 4 runs and Tori Hayunga won a game on the mound and she had 2 hits and 2 RBIs.

ADA — The Paynesville softball continued its strong early season surge with a pair of wins Saturday.

The Bulldogs defeated Frazee 13-1 in five innings and then downed Norman County 5-4 in their second game of the day.

The Bulldogs improved to 3-0.

Paynesville scored 10 first-inning runs against Frazee, which was way more support than winning pitcher Megan Schaefer would need. She scattered five hits, didn’t allow a walk and struck out four.

The Bulldogs’ Brooke Wuertz had three hits and drove in two, Kayla Schaefer was 2-for-4, drove in three runs and scored twice, and Sam Dahl doubled and singled in two trips, had an RBI and scored twice. Megan Schaefer had two hits and scored a run.

Megan Schaefer also earned the win in game two, working all seven innings and striking out three.

BOLD’s Morgan Flann pitched a sold game and the Warriors scored twice in the top of the seventh inning to down MACCRAY.

Flann pitched all seven innings, allowing a run on 3 hits while striking out 7. Taylor Ebnet, Peyton Wies and Baylie Kubesh all had two hits for the Warriors.

MACCRAY’s Erica Bennema had a double in two trips. Jennifer Sommers took the loss and had a hit.
