Willmar HOF member Allan Backlund dies Allan Backlund of rural Kandiyohi passed away Monday at age 83. He had been ill with cancer recently.

Backlund was inducted into the Willmar Cardinal Pride Hall of Fame’s third class of inductees in 2004. After earning six letters in football and baseball, the 1948 graduate remained close to Cardinals sports as a basketball scorekeeper and the football chain gang for a quarter century.

Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Ebenezer Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kandiyohi.

Valley women’s golf beginning Thursday The Valley Golf Club Thursday Morning Ladies Golf League starts this Thursday snow, rain or shine with coffee and a meeting at 8:30 a.m. at the club house in Willmar. Golfing will follow. Non-members are welcome.

Willmar’s Hastad, Hovland get CLC weekly accolades Two Willmar High School students were recognized as Central Lakes Conference Performers of the Week on Monday:

McKenzie Hastad, 11, softball-offense — in 3 games went 5-for-8 with 2 doubles, 3 RBI and 2 runs.

Bailey Hovland, 11, girls track and field — won discus at invites at Sartell (106-8) and Monticello (114-6) and placed fourth in the shot put at Sartell.

Baker gets hole-in-one at Little Crow Country Club Jordon Baker of New London made a hole-in-one Tuesday at Little Crow Country Club.

Baker aced No. 5 on the Pines course from 159 yards out using a 6-iron.

PGA Tour drops its doping case against Vijay Singh CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The PGA Tour dropped its doping case against Vijay Singh on Tuesday based on new information from the World Anti-Doping Agency, which said using deer antler spray is no longer prohibited because it contains such small amounts of a growth hormone factor.

The decision ends a three-month saga that had players wondering what would happen to Singh, a 50-year-old Fijian with three major championships who is famous for the endless hours he spends on the practice range.

Singh said in an interview with Sports Illustrated that he paid $9,000 last November for deer antler spray, hologram chips and other products from Sports With Alternatives To Steroids. The spray was said to contain IGF-1, an insulin-like growth hormone that is on the list of banned substances under the tour’s anti-doping policy.

Scoring correction at MACCRAY/RCW track meet A scoring error in the boys pole vault led to an incorrect score for the MACCRAY/Renville County West track team at its invitational on Monday in Clara City.

MACCRAY/RCW finished second in the meet and Lakeview moved to third place.
