Prep softball: Cardinals split with Sartell

SARTELL — The Willmar Cardinals played a mistake-free first game to get a win at Sartell on Thursday but dropped game two unable to overcome early gifts provided the host team.

Sarah Stadem belted 3 hits in the 6-1 Cardinal win and Kenzie Hastad drove in four runs with a pair of extra-base hits.

Heather Horning threw a gym — a 4-hitter with 2 passes and 9 strike outs.

In Game 1, Hastad tripled home two runs in the fifth and two more in the last inning with a double.

Willmar totaled 12 hits and had no errors for the first time.

Horning also had a pair of hits and Stadem drove in a run with one of her three singles.

Leah Ruter had a rough start in Game 2 when the first three Sabres reached on a walk, hit batter and a fielding error. Bri Stelten followed with a 2-run single in a 3-run first.

Ruter held the Sabres scoreless the rest of the way (Horning threw a scoreless seventh) but Willmar got only two back.

Megan Rudnick had an rbi double in the fourth and soon scored on Jordan Martins’ fly out.

The Cardinals are back in Stearns County tomorrow for a 5 p.m. game at St. Cloud Apollo.
