Amateur Baseball Roundup: Soine throws no-hitter for NL-Spicer

FREEPORT — Kevin Soine threw a no-hitter and Mike Danielson drove in the game’s only run in the fourth inning to lead the New London-Spicer Twins to a 1-0 win over New Market Saturday at the Freeport Black Sox Tournament.

Soine worked all seven innings, walking three and striking out two, and outdueled the Muskies’ Nate Rost, who allowed just four hits and struck out seven.

Dean Stier had two hits for the Twins and Danielson singled in Tyler Horning. Steven Ammerman had NLS’ other hit.

North St. Paul pitcher Tom Doran tamed New London-Spicer’s bats, allowing just two hits while striking out seven in the Red Roosters’ win Sunday.

Doran also had two hits and drove in a run. The Roosters’ John Slick was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.

Ben Kulset and Ryan Horning had the Twins’ hits and Nick Bergeson drove in Horning with NLS’ lone run in the fifth.

The Spartans ran their record to 3-1 with a road victory Sunday.

Montevideo trailed 5-3 through seven but scored five runs in the eighth and ninth innings.

With the score 5-5 in the top of the ninth, Joe Schlagel hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to drive in Joe Bednar with the winning run. Jared Holmgren’s two-out, two-run double brought home Cameron Vien and Christian Brabender with insurance runs.

Vien, who worked the final 2-1/3 innings, shut down Canby in the bottom of the ninth to get the win.

The Chiefs roughed up the Spartans’ early, scoring eight first-inning runs and downing Montevideo in eight innings on Saturday in Benson.

Benson’s Brian Shaw was 3-for-5 with an RBI and Carl Hoffman drove in three runs. Cam Simmonds had a hit, drove in two and scored two.

Rick Jepma scattered 10 hits, walking one and striking out six, to pick up the win.

Montevideo’s Jake Bednar was 3-for-4 and had an RBI and Joe Bednar and Christian Brabender both had two hits for the Spartans. Montevideo outhit the Chiefs 11-8 but committed six errors and surrendered 15 walks.

SUNBURG — Five-run innings in the fourth and sixth made the difference for the Atwater Chuckers, who defeated Norway Lake-Sunburg 12-7 on Sunday in a County Line League game.

A late-inning rally fell short for the Lakers, who hurt themselves with four errors.

Atwater winning pitcher Justin Schroeder did himself a good turn, hitting a grand slam home run. JaColby Anderson drove in two runs and Zach Cunningham also doubled in a run. Michael Malvin had two doubles in five trips to the plate.

NLS’ Jonah Johnson was 4-for-5 with two doubles and a pair of RBI, and Justin Johnson, James Cortez and Aaron Zimmer also drove in runs.

Sacred Heart 2, Lamberton 1

Sacred Heart produced all its offense in the first inning but it was enough to hold off Lamberton 2-1 at home on Saturday.

The Saints scored both its runs and collected all three of their hits in the first.

Starter Nate Hebrink allowed just two hits over the first four innings and Matt Hoenen got the win in relief, surrendering just two hits. Lamberton’s Colby Pack hit a solo home run in the eighth.

In the first, Mike Kueschel singled, advanced to third on Ryan Hebrink’s double and scored on Dakota Freiborg’s ground out. Tom Lippert singled to knock in Hebrink.

The Saints, now 2-2 overall, play Tracy at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart.
