Prep Track: Card girls 2nd, boys 3rd at CLC championships

SAUK RAPIDS — The Willmar boys track and field team placed third in the Central Lakes meet on Thursday and the girls second.

Brainerd took the title with 124.5 points, then Willmar 118.5, Sartell 110.5 and Alexandria 109. Sartell was the 2012 front-runner and won the State True Team championship on Saturday.

Alexandria’s Wensia Johnson and Willmar’s Rose Jackson went 1-2 in the 100 dash, Johnson, the meet’s co-record holder now owns the standard outright after a blazing 11.69. Jackson’s time was 12.42.

Samantha Hanson took second in the 1600 (5:11.66) and second in the 800 (2:20.31)while Sophie Schmitz was runner-up in the 400 (1:01.5). Miranda Roelofs went a personal-best 46.47 for second in the 300 hurdles. Willmar’s top 100 hurdler, Haley Mottinger, fell on the final hurdle.

Jackson was also second to Johnson, a freshman, in the 200 dash. Jackson ran also on Willmar’s winning 4x200 relay (1:46.93).

Johnson uncorked a historic long jump sailing 19-5¼ to break the conference record by a full foot (Alexandria’s Rosey Erickson had the record 18-4½).

Willmar got a win in the field events from junior Bailey Hovland who threw the plate 116-111.

Sartell repeated as boys conference champion with 129 points followed by Brainerd at 127 and then Willmar at 111.

Chris Cunningham won the 200 dash (22.82) and Connor Haugen placed second in the 800 in a personal-best 1:59.40, only.30 out of first. Cunningham took second in the 100 dash timing 11.20 and leaped 20-9¾ in the long jump pit.

Tom Seifert placed second in the 1600 run (4:31.61).

Willmar started the meet winning the 4x800 in 8:29.33.

Monte boys, LQPV/DB girls win

MONTEVIDEO — The Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd girls track team won the Section 3A-12 meet on Thursday with 192 points.

Benson/KMS took second with 161 and Montevideo was third with 125 points.

In the boys division, Montevideo piled up 195 points followed by LQPV/DB with 140 and Yellow Medicine East with 119.

The Section 3A meets is at Benson next Thursday.

At Minnewaska High School, Morris/Chokio-Alberta won the Sub-Section 21, 3A titles in both boys and girls. Osakis was the runnerup in girls and West Central Area in boys.

Stimpel leads BOLD

REDWOOD VALLEY — BOLD senior Jamilla Stimpel won both the 100 dash (13.0 and the 200 (26.58) to highlight the Warriors’ day at the Sub-Section 3A-11 track and field meet on Thursday.

Stimpel also anchored the team’s winning 4x100 relay (52.67). Stimpel took third long jump (15-3).

Mallarie Steffel won pole vault (7-8) and Karly Sifferath the shot put (32-11) and also discus 114-6.

In the boys meet, BOLD freshman Slade Hotovec took second in both the 200  (24.32) and the 400 (54.97).

Nikko Berge, also a freshman, cleared 11-6 to place runner-up in pole vault.

Canby/Minneota/Liincoln HI won the girls division with Tracy-Milroy-Balaton second and BOLD/BLHS third among 9 teams.

Redwood Valley topped the 7-school boys meet with BOLD/BLHS fifth.

The Section 3A track and field meet is at Benson next Thursday.
