Golf: Hanner turns back clock to win LCCC Shortstop

(Tribune photo by Rand Middleton) Unfazed by a chilled north wind, Jon Hanner, left, of St. Paul nails his drive off the No. 7 tee on the Oaks course, on the way to paring the hole. Two holes later, he would finish with a five-stroke victory at the Little Crow Country Club Shortstop on Saturday.

NEW LONDON — Jon Hanner was hot, the weather was not.

Still the 36-year-old Delano native played the final nine holes of the Little Crow Country Club Shortstop in a polo shirt while pushing his bag cart, sometimes running down the emerald fairways.

“That’s the best I played all spring,” commented the St. Paul resident. “This was really a treat.”

Hanner said he makes a living playing poker and with 18 holes down his nearest pursuers were competing for the second-best hand.

Hanner filed a five-under 67 on Pines and Willows for a five-stroke lead on 2011 runner-up Josh Hagstrom of Island Pine at Atwater.

The north wind had picked up by mid-afternoon and the chill seemed like a grey day in October despite the greenery.

Hanner was headed to a six-under 102 when he landed his tee shot at No. 9 Oaks in the pond and took a double-bogey for a one-over 37 and a cumulative four-under 104.

This is his first win out here since the Early Bird in 2002, his first time out, coaxed by Appleton native Jeff Barney.  He’s played “four or five times” each at both Little Crow and Eagle Creek but never won again until now. But his résumé does include the 2011 State Publinx championship.

Hagstrom finished runner-up at 109 while Andy Jacobson and Danny Anderson each came in at 111.

Not only did the day’s weather pump up scores but because of the short spring most golfers find their game as late blooming as the lilacs.
