Prep Baseball Roundup: Morris/CA wins in 3AA, LQPV falls in 3A

MARSHALL — Ben Morken struck out eight, surrendered four singles and didn’t give up an earned run for Lac qui Parle Valley Saturday, but the senior didn’t get any offensive support as the Eagles were edged 1-0 by Windom in the winner’s bracket final of the Section 3A playoffs.

“We left 12 (runners) stranded and that was the problem,” said LQPV coach Bart Hill. “We had chances. It’s a tough loss because Morken pitched so well.”

LQPV loaded the bases in the first and fourth innings, had runners on second and third in the third, and had a runner in scoring position in the seventh. But two great defensive plays by Windom shortstop Brandon Thongvivong kept LQPV off the scoreboard.

“We couldn’t come up with a two-out hit,” added Hill.

Windom (12-6) got the game’s only run in the first inning. Andy Pfeffer notched the first of his three singles and moved to second on a groundout. LQPV then made its only error of the game during the next at-bat to allow Pfeffer to score.

Preston Kraft doubled and singled, and Jalen Baldwin and Dylan Lillejord both singled for LQPV (18-2).

Collin Lovell struck out 10 and walked five to pick up the win for Windom, which will play Tuesday’s LQPV/Springfield (19-4) winner on Thursday in Marshall for the section title. LQPV edged Springfield 2-1 in the third round last Tuesday. The second meeting on Tuesday in Marshall starts at 5 p.m.

Section 3AA

Morris/CA 11, Pipestone 2

The Tigers scored four runs in the fourth to take control of the game, then finished off Pipestone with a five-run seventh on Saturday in the Section 3AA playoffs in Marshall.

Under windy conditions, the Tigers scored run thanks to five sacrifices — three bunts, two sacrifice flies — a squeeze play and five Pipestone errors.

“With it being windy, we played good small ball, and we took advantage of their errors,” said Morris/CA head coach Mark Torgerson.

Tyler Henrichs had a hit and drove in three runs and Logan Manska had a hit, an RBI and scored three runs.

Jacob Torgerson worked six innings and struck out eight. Mac Beyer threw the final inning, striking out two.

The Tigers, 17-3, play Fairmont in the losers bracket final at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Marshall. The winner of that game plays Luverne in the section final on Thursday.
