Prep baseball: Lakers tame Bulldogs

ST. CLOUD — Austin Ostrander went 3-for-3 and sophomore Matt Paulson supplied some key insurance late to help Minnewaska end Paynesville’s season as the Lakers clipped the Bulldogs 4-1 in an elimination game of the Section 6AA playoffs.

Minnewaska (12-7) now takes on Sauk Centre, another West Central Conference rival, in another elimination game today at 5 p.m. on Dick Putz Field in St. Cloud. The winner will then play Little Falls in the loser’s bracket final later in the evening.

Minnewaska, which beat the Bulldogs 10-6 earlier in the season, swept Sauk Centre in a doubleheader that concluded the regular season.

Monday’s game progressed into a pitcher’s duel between Paynesville senior Nathan Meyer and Minnewaska sophomore Riley Thompson. Both gave up eight hits and combined to strike out 11 in a pair of complete-game performances. But it was some timely hitting that gave Thompson the win.

Ostrander knocked in the game’s first run when his first-inning single brought in Jake Amundson, who was 2-for-3. Ostrander then scored in the fourth to break a 1-1 tie that came about when Trent Gertken hit a solo home run to left for Paynesville in the third.

The Lakers then got some valuable insurance in the sixth when Paulson’s single was misplayed by the Bulldogs, allowing Ostrander and courtesy runner Luke Nielsen to score.

The runs came in handy for Thompson as Paynesville put runners on second and third in the seventh. Thompson worked out of the jam that was created by Meyer’s double when he induced a flyout to end the game.
