Boys golf: Willmar’s Kallevig co-medalist at 8AAA meet

SAUK CENTRE — Willmar junior Tony Kallevig, Section 8AAA co-medalist, will be joined by eighth-grade teammate Levi Hauser at next week’s state tournament.

Kallevig shot 71-75-146 over the two-day tournament which concluded Tuesday at GreyStone, north of Sauk Centre. Hauser tapped into the fifth qualifying spot shooting 76-79-155.

Alexandria shot from behind to take first place as moisture fell day long, especially hard during the opening nine which was delayed an hour.

Alex was the only team to drop strokes the second day (313 to 310). It was enough to nip first-day leader St. Cloud Tech (303-321) by one stroke, 623 to 624.

Willmar, which was tied for second after day with a sparkling 308, came in a 329 for a 637 total — good for third place, one shot in front of Moorhead.

Kallevig was headed for a par 72 when he lost three shots to par over the final three holes in the difficult conditions. He tied for first with Nick Brundell of the section champions.

It was the last meet for seniors Cody Magnuson, who shot 76 on Monday, Zech Streed and Hunter Schneider.

Kallevig and Hauser are the first Cardinal boys to qualify for state since Tom Wagner in 2007 and Derik Hilding in 2006.
