Prep Baseball: Cards display flair for dramatic

WILLMAR - Willmar's flair for the dramatic carried on Tuesday as the Cardinals took a pair of victories against Rocori in a battle for Central Lakes Conference standings.

The Cardinals won game two with an RBI double from Jack Baumgart in the top of the eighth inning to take the 3-2 victory. Willmar won the opening game 5-3 behind a strong pitching performance from Bryan Weidemann.

"We're starting to play well," said Willmar head coach Tom DeBoer. "If you look at the teams we've played, St. Cloud Tech is a 4A school, Hutchinson is a strong team, Alexandria is Alexandria, and we stuck with them all and we've won a lot of games against good teams and teams we should beat."

Pitching and timely hitting has been the team's calling card and that was no different Tuesday. Brady Bauman pitched 6-2/3 innings with two runs allowed (one earned) in a strong start in game two before turning it over to the bullpen who kept a clean score. Madsen earned the win with one out in the seventh inning and Caleb Ditmarson earned the save, his second of the day, following Baumgart's RBI double.

Weidemann earned the win for his five-inning start in game one where he struck out six and only allowed one unearned run. Like in game two, Ditmarson entered in the final inning and kept the Spartans off the board.

"Brady and Bryan pitched tremendous today," DeBoer said. "Caleb came in to close out both games and he wanted the ball both times ... We have confidence in a lot of guys. Rocori is a solid lineup one-through-nine and our guys handled that well."
