Garcia homer helps Stingers win fourth straight

WILLMAR - Richie Garcia broke a tie with a two-run home run in the eighth inning and the Willmar Stingers ran their winning streak to four games with a 5-4 victory over Duluth on Sunday at Bill Taunton Stadium.

In the eighth with the Stingers and Huskies tied 3-3, Jayson Newman walked with one out and Garcia followed with his homer.

In the top of the ninth, reliever Jake Drew allowed a lead-off single and, eventually, a run. But Drew got a strikeout to end the game.

The Stingers scored first in the first inning when Matt Rudick doubled and scored on Nic Hernandez' RBI groundout.

In the second, Jaxon Hallmark hit a two-out single and Rudick blasted a two-run homer for a 3-0 lead.

The Stingers completed a sweep of a four-game home set against Waterloo and Duluth and now hit the road for a pair of games at Rochester. Games start at 7:05 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday.

Willmar didn't score in its final three at bats but put up enough runs early to hold off first-place Duluth on Saturday at Bill Taunton Stadium.

Nic Hernandez homered, doubled and drove in two runs, and John Trousdale hit a solo shot.

Nick Dentoni worked the first five innings to get the victory. He allowed a run on three hits.

In the top of the 10th, Ben Kulset singled in the go-ahead run and Jake Rambow doubled home Kulset with an insurance run.

In the Men's Open Singles, Connor Hutton defeated Peyton

LeClair 6-3, 6-0 and in the Women's Open Singles, Danielle Thorfinnson defeated

Ava Hanson 6-0, 6-0.

In Mixed Open Doubles, Elise Bierbaum and Tanner Funk defeated
