Stingers dig huge hole, lose at Waterloo

WATERLOO, Iowa - The Willmar Stingers dug a huge hole against Waterloo and could never climb out, losing the first game of the Northwoods League North Division second-half race 10-6 on Wednesday.

Waterloo took an 8-0 lead after just two innings and three Bucks pitchers held the Stingers mostly at bay the rest of the way.

The Stingers' Matt Rudick, Eli Wilson, Jayson Newman and Joey Ortiz all had two hits and drove in runs, and Nic Hernandez had three hits and scored a run.

Willmar's game on Tuesday against Eau Claire was postponed because of unplayable conditions at Bill Taunton Stadium. Overnight rains in Monday left standing water on parts of the field.

The Steven Brault Youth Jersey Giveaway Night scheduled for Tuesday's game was rescheduled for the 7:05 p.m. game on Wednesday, Aug. 1 against the Duluth Huskies.

Fans who had tickets for Tuesday's game can exchange them in the Stingers ticket office for any regular season home game during the rest of the 2018 season based on ticket availability.

On the last day of the Northwoods League's first half race on Tuesday, Bismarck's 3-1 win over St. Cloud and Duluth's 8-3 loss to Rochester gave the Larks the North Division first-half title and a spot in August's playoffs. The Stingers finished 22-13, 2-1/2 games back of the Larks (25-11) in the first half.

The Stingers play at Waterloo Thursday night before returning home for a two-game set against Mankato starting on Friday.
