SPICER — BOLD struck early, capitalizing on an error and a wild pitch for a 1-0 lead on New London-Spicer. That small lead was enough through three innings on Tuesday.

From that point on, NLS's defense and pitching limited BOLD to just two hits over the final six innings. And in the fourth, the offense picked up and propelled the host Wildcats to a 9-1 victory against the Mudhens in game one of a best-of-three series in the semifinals of the Central Sub-State Legion baseball tournament.

The two teams will meet again for game two on Thursday, set for 6 p.m. at Lions Memorial Park in Bird Island. Game three, if needed, will follow immediately afterwards.

Held to one hit over the first three innings, Matt Spaulding led the bottom of the fourth off with a single, followed by Derek Dolezal getting hit by a pitch and a Jake Schmidt walk that loaded the bases. Spaulding reached home on a sacrifice fly, Dolezal on a Christian Lessman single and Schmidt on a bases-loaded walk from Trent Pientka. Lessman scored the final run of the frame John Perkins sacrifice fly.

The fifth yielded similar results, with Dolezal drilling a two-run double and later scoring on a ground out. NLS scored its final two runs in the sixth thanks to a two-run Spaulding single.

Lessman picked up the win after 5-2/3 innings on the mound. He struck out six with two hits, four walks and one unearned run allowed over that span. Jon Kaelke continued to baffle the BOLD hitters, giving up just one hit over 1-1/3 innings.

The Mudcats' lone run came from leadoff batter Luke Ryan in the first inning. Hayden Tersteeg, Ryan and John Burman accounted for all three of the team's hits, all singles. James Woelfel was pegged with the loss after allowing four runs (all earned) on four hits, three walks and one strikeout in four innings of work.

Carter Ochsendorf delivered a two-run triple in the sixth inning to ice the game for Willmar VFW Post 1639 in a 4-1 win against BOLD Tuesday night.
