Prep volleyball: Willmar creaky but stays at top of CLC

WILLMAR — The Cardinals held on to defeat St. Cloud Apollo on Thursday night 25-22, 15-25, 31-29, 25-20.

Clearly, the Central Lakes co-leader, along with Alexandria and Fergus Falls, didn’t have the clutch fully engaged against the winless Eagles.

Willmar had four or five chances in Game 4 to serve out but couldn’t finish until winning 31-29.

“Our girls did hang in there and made big plays at the end of games,” said Willmar head coach Traci Grussing.

Another bright spot was the serving of Jamie Reyes. The junior defensive specialist had only a single miss in 26 chances with 4 whacks going unreturned for aces.

Dani Rosen and Kenzie Hastad with 13 kills apiece led the net play. But with scattergun passing, the Cardinals’ offense seldom got into top gear.

On Saturday, the team is at the Big Lake Invite.
