Prep football: Cards’ 33-point 2nd quarter buries Sabres

SARTELL — The Central Lakes Conference, founded in 1975, and launched two years later has undergone numerous modifications in its nearly 40 years.

For the first time, the CLC football loop is two six-team divisions — a North and a South, much better labels than the Big Ten’s Legends and Leaders (Say, what?).

After subduing Sartell last night 46-7, the Willmar Cardinals are 2-0 in the South, tied for first with Apollo, which dunked Sauk Rapids 42-20. Tech (1-0) plays Rocori today.

The Friday night one-sided outcome at the Sabres remodeled stadium surely got the conference’s attention.

After a scoreless first period, Willmar scored on five straight possessions for a 33-7 lead at the split.

Augustine Hahn, Willmar’s “running quarterback,” completed 14 of 17 passes for 218 yards and three touchdowns. Scoring connections went to Austin Grove twice, and Adam Nibaur. Michael Heitzman busted around end for a 40-yard TD run and Hahn muscled his way into the end zone from inside the five.

The defense asserted itself early to set. It stopped the Sabres on fourth and goal from six nearing the end of the first quarter. From the five, the Cards drove 95 yards fueled on Hahn hookups with Grove, twice, and  Nibaur. Grove made a highlight virtual one-handed catch to cap the drive.

The defense corralled Darek Stachowski, who ran wild for 231 yards a week earlier at Alexandria. He got 56 yards in 22 carries (2.5 yards-per-carry) and scored his lone TD on a flare pass from Brandon Snoberger, one of the Sabres’ QB’s four completions in 15 attempts.

The lockdown defense got picks from Colton Carlson and Tyler Stegeman and a fumble recovery by Travis Deegan, forced by Stegeman. LB Buzzy Tollefson made 10 tackles and LB Vaughn Johnson 8.

Heitzman sped for 139 yards in 24 snaps, plus another 45 yards receiving. Hahn finished 16 of 22 for 233 yards passing. Grove had six catches for 116 yards and Nibaur 5 for 74.

The 46 are the most points Willmar has scored since scoring 49 points (twice) at the end of the 2010 regular season.

Next Friday, at Hodapp, Willmar welcomes Grand Rapids, who along with Moorhead and Bemidji are part of the new building blocks of the North Division.

The Thunderhawks lost 34-20 to the Spuds last night.
