WILLMAR — The Willmar volleyball team was up against a strong Mankato West team on Monday on the Cardinals’ home court and didn’t play the kind of volleyball that could result in an upset.

After dropping game one, the Scarlets rallied to defeat Willmar 20-25, 25-19, 25-22 and 25-17.

Mankato West has won 15 straight matches and is 16-1 overall. The Cards are 7-4 overall.

“They had some big hitters and we didn’t play very good defense,” said Cardinals head coach Traci Grussing. “We didn’t play a whole lot like a team and I think got a little intimidated by their hitters.”

Willmar’s Leah Ruter led the team with 14 kills and she also had an ace block.

Dani Rosen had 11 kills and a block, and McKenzie Hastad and Cami Sletta both had 6 kills.

Cardinals setter Riley Grussing finished with 40 set assists and she also served 6 aces. Grussing also had 8 digs. Jennie Magnuson put away 4 kills and had an ace block, and Allie Roehl served 2 aces and had 13 digs.

The Cardinals again play at hom today against Sartell at 7 p.m.
