Girls hockey: Cardinals drop season opener to Blue Devils

WILLMAR — Willmar pounded out 39 shots on goal but couldn’t get one past Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Wadena-Deer Creek goalie Angela Hanson and the Cardinals dropped their season opener 1-0 on Friday.

LPGE/WDC freshman forward McKenzie Christianson snapped a 0-0 tie 38 seconds into the third period for the only goal of the game.

Cardinal sophomore goalie Johnika Wodash stopped 23 shots.

Willmar head coach JaColby Anderson opened the season with the top lines consisting of Annie Johnston centering Miranda Roelofs (RW) and Shelby Schneider (LW), and Alex Sobieck centering Riley Schneider (RW) and Kierra Miller (LW). The defensive pairs were Amelia Amon/Ellissa Weiler and Carly Derouin/Allison Freese fronting goalie Wodash.

The Cardinals next play Tuesday when they host New Ulm.
