Girls hockey: Cardinals fall to New Ulm

WILLMAR — Alex Sobieck’s second goal tied the game early in the third period, but New Ulm rattled off three goals in less than five minutes and defeated Willmar 6-3 on Tuesday at the Willmar Civic Center.

The Cardinals dropped to 0-2. They play next against Totino-Grace at 3 p.m. Saturday in Willmar.

On Tuesday, New Ulm’s Erika Ries and Brook Schugel sandwiched goals around Sobieck’s first tally to take a 2-1 lead after one period.

Willmar goalie Johnika Wodash and New Ulm netminder Julia Schaefer shut down the offenses in the second period, and Sobieck’s unassisted goal at 1:42 of the third tied the game.

But New Ulm’s Lexie Weiss put her team back on top with a goal just 18 seconds later and teammates Brittany Denn and Morgan Schaefer piled on, scoring at 5:19 and 6:45 of the third.

Willmar’s Riley Schneider, who assisted on Sobieck’s first period goal, scored unassisted at 9:59 of the third but the Cardinals couldn’t gain any more traction against Julia Schaefer and the Eagles’ defense.

Schugel added an empty-net goal at 15:37 to close out the scoring.

The Cardinals outshot the Eagles 19-18 through two periods but New Ulm doubled up on the Cards in the third, launching 14 shots on Wodash.
