Girls hockey: Sabres slash Willmar 12-2

SARTELL — The Willmar Cardinals played a strong first period then faded as the Sartell/Sauk Rapids Storm ’N’ Sabres offense took over to collect a 12-2 Central Lakes Conference victory in girls hockey.

“In the first period, we played really well,” said Cardinals head coach JaColby Anderson. “But in the second period, things just fell apart. We had a little bit of a let-up and they took advantage. We had to stop the bleeding and tonight we didn’t do it.”

“After the game, we talked about effort,” Anderson said, “and that we have to have it all the time, not just part of the time.”

Riley Schneider in the second period and Shelby Schneider in the third had the Willmar goals.

The Cardinals play Benson at 8 p.m. Friday in the second game of the Cardinals Thanksgiving Classic at the Civic Center.

Austin and Long Prairie-Grey Eagle play the tournament opener at 6 p.m. Friday.

The losing teams play at 2 p.m. Saturday with the championship game following at 4 p.m.
