Girls hockey: Sabres blank Cardinals

Tribune photo by Rand Middleton Willmar senior forward Miranda Roelofs circles the net to put a shot on Sartell goalie Clare Minnerath, who made the save, one of 12 in the first period that ended with the Sabres up 1-0 Thursday in Willmar.

WILLMAR — The Willmar girls hockey team surrendered two second-period goals but showed grit it lacked earlier in the season and stayed with Sartell-Sauk Rapids, losing 3-0 in a Central Lakes Conference game on Thursday in Willmar.

SSR led by a goal after one period, despite Willmar outshooting them 12-7. But the Cardinals then surrendered goals to Sarah Kaschmitter and Michaela Wurdelman in the second.

But the Cardinals weren’t overwhelmed by the turn for the worst, said head coach JaColby Anderson.

“I’m proud of how our girls played,” Anderson said. “We played a good first period, then we had a let-up in the second but I’m happy how they responded after giving up those two goals. Before, if we would have done that it would have become an 8, 9, 10 to nothing game.”

Willmar made stellar SSR goalie Clare Minnerath turn back 21 shots while Cardinals goalie Johnika Wodash made 26 stops.

The Cardinals play host to Cambridge-Isanti on Saturday at the Civic Center.
