MARSHALL — The Willmar Cardinals nipped at the Tigers’ tail all Tuesday night but could not catch up to the Section 2AAA leaders who won 84-72.

No wonder. Marshall was running downhill in their home gym making 33 of 47 shots, according to Willmar stats which is a 69 percent clip (74 percent inside the arc.)

Willmar shot a healthy 47 percent with all five starters reaching double figures: Adam Nibaur and Carter Johnson each 14, Joel Carter (4 steals) and Tyler Stegeman 12 apiece and Austin Grove 11.

With the shots falling like snow, the rebounds leaders for each team had just 4 apiece.

The Cardinals, who had one lead early, fell back by as many 16 in the first half, 40-24, but the visitors did make up ground late and it was a 10-point gap at intermission, 43-33.

Out of the break, Johnson, held scoreless the first half, fueled a Willmar burst that got Willmar quickly within two of the lead, first at 43-41 and again at 45-43. The Tigers pulled away once again, 55-46 before Willmar got its first bench points on back-to-back triples by Brady Damhof and then Dylan Schueler and it was 57-52.

But the Tigers rapid transition game and ball-pressure shot off the Cardinal spigot building to resume a double-digit lead.

The Tigers, whose coaching staff includes former Willmar Cardinal Casey Sussenguth (Ridgewater College/Southwest Minnesota State), improved to 11-3 and 4-0 in 2AAA.

Willmar drops to 9-4 and is 2-2 in the section, also losing 62-54 at Mankato West in November.
