Boys hockey: Storm rally past Cardinals

Tribune photo by Tom Larson Willmar’s Cole Hagen snaps off a shot and beats Sauk Rapids goalie William Mortenson for an unassisted first-period goal that put the Cardinals up 2-1 in a Central Lakes Conference game Thursday at the Civic Center.

WILLMAR — A one-goal lead after one period didn’t hold up as the Sauk Rapids Storm overtook Willmar 4-2 on Thursday at the Cardinal Arena.

Goals by Hunter Mottinger, on a power play at 9:30, and Cole Hagen at 14:29 would turn out to be the extent of the Cardinals’ output.

Turnovers and the Sauk Rapids front line of Travis Kothenbeutel, Ryan Ruter and Wyatt Orth helped the Storm (6-5, 11-7) sweep the series. Sauk also came from behind in the first meeting.

The go-ahead goal at 15:48 of the second period came on a two-man advantage after two Willmar penalties in the 15th minute.

“You can’t do that against a good team with a top line like they have,” said Willmar head coach Dan Tollefson. “We had them on the ropes for a while.”

Levi Goosmann made 32 saves. Willmar put 23 shots on winning goalie William Mortenson.

Willmar (2-4, 8-9) can now ready for the Cream Can game against Section 3A foe Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato on Monday at the Cardinal Arena.
