Gymnastics: Cardinals 9th at State True Team Meet

MELROSE — The hometown Dutchmen shaded Austin by less than two-tenths of a point to grade the Class A True Team Championship at Melrose on Saturday.

Melrose finished with 183.4 points to 183.275 for the Packers. In True Team competition the score of all five gymnasts are counted.

Willmar placed ninth in a 10-team field that brought together much of the best talent in Class A.

“It was a tough day on beam and bars for us,” said Willmar coach Jodi Mottinger. “The girls were, perhaps, a little nervous on the big stage and to start on beam, as we did, is considered a bad draw.

“Stephanie Thompson did have a very solid beam routine in the anchor position. We came back and had a strong team showing on floor and vault where our team ranked sixth and seventh, respectively, compared to ninth on beam and 10th on bars.”

Thompson was seventh on floor with a 9.4 and Haley Mottinger eight on vault (9.425) and 10th on floor (9.35).
