Girls Hockey Roundup: Icebreakers sink Cardinals

ST. CLOUD — Annie Johnston scored a goal early in the third period to pull Willmar within a goal of the St. Cloud but the Icebreakers regained control with a goal 30 seconds later and defeated the Cardinals 5-2 Thursday.

“St. Cloud has a lot of depth — they have two or three solid lines — and their goalie is really good,” said Willmar head coach JaColby Anderson. “But we played hard and competed and that’s all you ask against a really good team like that.”

St. Cloud outshot the Cardinals 50-25, but Willmar’s Riley Schneider’s unassisted goal in the second period also pulled the team within a goal.

But in both instances, the Icebreakers countered quickly, and Tatum Peterson’s second goal of the game at 13:00 of the third period sealed the game.

Willmar goalie Johnika Wodash made 45 saves.

The Cardinals play at Brainerd at 4:45 p.m. today and turn around to play their third game in three days against River Lakes at 7:15 p.m. Saturday in Paynesville.
