Prep Wrestling: Cardinals earn share of CLC title

SAUK RAPIDS — Five Sauk Rapids forfeits aided Willmar’s 57-14 rout of the Storm Thursday in a Central Lakes Conference dual.

The victory gives Willmar at least a share of the conference title and improves the Cardinals’ record in the CLC to a perfect 7-0. Willmar (14-2 overall in duals and ranked No. 8 in Class AAA) can win the title outright next Thursday when it hosts Fergus Falls for ‘Pack the Gym Night’. It’s also the last regular-season dual for the Cardinals.

Clay Carlson earned a tight 3-2 decision for Willmar at 106 to open the dual, but Sauk Rapids then won at the next two weights to take a 8-3 lead. Willmar roared back to win the next nine matches — five by forfeit, pins from Levi Milhausen at 138 and Estevan Navarro at 145, and decisions from Austin Miley at 126 and Zach Lueders at 132.

The teams then traded pins to close out the evening, capped by Leon Richards’ third-period fall for Willmar at 285.

Willmar is at the Anoka Duals on Saturday.
