PLYMOUTH — The Willmar Cardinals, who already punched their ticket to the state tournament as a team, put on a show Friday during the first day of competition at the Section 6AAA individual tournament.

Eighth-grader Israel Navarro notched a technical fall and a decision to advance to the final in the 106-pound division and 10 of his Willmar teammates advanced to the semifinals at the Robbinsdale Armstrong High School.

Besides Israel, junior Juan Resendez at 120 (two decisions), senior Austin Miley at 126 (pin), senior Zach Lueders at 132 (pin and decision), junior Estevan Navarro at 138 (major), junior Travis Deegan at 152 (technical fall), sophomore Colten Carlson at 160 (pin), junior Vaughn Johnson at 170 (pin), senior Kory Welgraven at 182 (two pins), junior Matt Hennes at 220 (major) and senior heavyweight Leon Richards (pin) all went undefeated Friday.

The pins that came from Carlson, Johnson, Welgraven (in the quarterfinals) and Richards came before the one-minute mark of the first period.

The tourney wraps up Saturday and the top-two finishers in each weight qualify for the state individual tournament that is next Friday and Saturday at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

The entire state team tournament is Thursday at the ‘X’ and Willmar, ranked No. 7 in the latest Class AAA poll, opens with No. 6 Hastings at 9 a.m.
