Prep wrestling: Cardinals advance 7 with 6 champs, runner-up

PLYMOUTH — Willmar senior Austin Miley repeated as champion and teammates junior Estevan Navarro, junior Travis Deegan, sophomore Colten Carlson, junior Vaughn Johnson and senior heavyweight Leon Richards also won their weight classes Saturday at the Section 6AAA individual tournament at the Robbinsdale Armstrong High School.

Those six, along with junior Matt Hennes after winning a true-second match in four overtimes at 220, advanced to the state individual tournament Friday and Saturday at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

“There were a ton of exciting matches throughout the weekend. We are so proud of our wrestlers; how they performed, as well as the sportsmanship they continue to display,” said Willmar co-head coach Ed Oehlers. “In this competition setting there were a lot of emotional matches and situations, upsets, and challenges. Our wrestlers demonstrated great character, and at the same time provided excellent performances.”

Miley notched two pins to reach the title match at 126 where he edged Luke Schmalz of Mound Westonka 5-3. Miley was the 132-pound champ last year.

Richards also earned two pins, both in the first period, to reach the final. Navarro at 138 and Carlson at 160 both had a technical fall and pin en route to claiming titles. Deegan’s three wins at 152 were two decisions and technical fall, and Johnson had a pin, major and decision to win at 170.

Navarro, Deegan, Carlson and Johnson also qualified for state last year with Carlson finishing second in the 152-pound division.

Falling just short of advancing to state Saturday after losing true-second matches were eighth-grader Israel Navarro at 106, freshman Jacob Bollig at 113 and senior Kory Welgraven at 182.

The Cardinals also advanced to state as a team and will open against Hastings in the quarterfinals at 9 a.m. Thursday at the Xcel Energy Center.
