WILLMAR — The Willmar Cardinals opened the Section 2AA-South playoffs with a convincing 7-0 win over Delano on a cold, windy day at the Willmar High School courts.

Isaac Yoakum and Drew Corneil won in three sets at 1- and 2-singles but the other five matches were decided in straight sets.

“(Yoakum) and (Corneil) brought out their best and outlasted their opponents with steady play and quick footwork,” said Cardinals head coach Jim Anderson. “(Swoboda) and Obregon) both established a game plan to keep the ball in play and attack short balls, which proved successful.”

Willmar’s doubles teams surrendered just eight games in the three matches.

“All three doubles teams jumped on the Tigers early and never let up for straight-set wins,” Anderson said. “It’s nice for all 10 of our players to pick up a first round win to establish confidence.”

The Cardinals play section No. 2-seed Mankato East at 4:15 p.m. Thursday in Mankato.
