It’s only the first lap front straight, but this would be the order of finish for the boys 1,600 run at the Central Lakes Conference Championships on Thursday at Willmar’s Hodapp Field. WILLMAR — The Brainerd boys and the Alexandria girls, both pre-meet favorites, won team titles on Thursday at the Central Lakes Conference Championships at Hodapp Field in ideal conditions.

Willmar, the host school, placed fourth in each division.

Among the Willmar highlights were a first in the boys 4x800 relay and a second in the girls 4x800. Samantha Hanson finished second to Alexandria’s Bethany Hasz in the 1,600-meter run.

Sophia Schmitz won both the 400 dash and 800 run, a repeat of her performance at Class AA True Team on Saturday. Bailey Hovland got off a throw of 115-9 to win discus by five inches.

The Cardinals took three of the top five places in the boys 1,600 run and would lead nearing the meet’s halfway point. But the Cardinals do not score well in field events, plus Brainerd is loaded in the sprints and also scores big in the jumps.

The Alexandria girls returned to full strength for the meet with both the Hasz sisters on the track. Megan followed Bethany’s win in the 1,600 with a first-place 3,200 time of 10:50.63, which was 43 seconds up on her nearest pursuer.

Alexandria also had the top sprinter in Wensia Johnson; her 100-dash time of 12.02 set a new CLC standard.
