WILLMAR -- The Willmar girls hockey team won its second straight game with a 6-0 pounding of Mankato East in the first round of the Cardinal Classic Friday.

The Cardinals (2-2) will face Morris/Benson Area, which beat Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato 6-2 in the early game Friday, for the championship at 7 p.m. at the Civic Center. Mankato East and LDC will play for third place at 5 p.m.

From the start, Willmar pressed hard in the Mankato East zone and Chelsey Wierschem broke the scoreless tie with a breakaway shot in the first period.

Other players got into the act after a 1-0 first period, with Ali Sing, Becca Freese, Kayte Cole and Ashley Hutton netting goals. Wierschem finished with two goals and an assist. Meckenzie Dahle recorded two assists, with Sing and Samantha Block getting one each.

"We passed the puck really well and had a nice team effort," Willmar coach Rick Dahle said. "A lot of players contributed."

Hutton's goal came after she blocked a shot in the Willmar end. She recovered the puck and skated past the Mankato East defense to net an unassisted score.

Goalie Amanda Croonquist recorded nine saves.

"She made the key saves when we needed it," Dahle said.

The Cardinals outshot Mankato East, 44-9.
