Willmar storms past Sauk Rapids

SAUK RAPIDS -- Taylor Filipek netted 23 points, Jordan Smith added 18 more to help Willmar drub Sauk Rapids 78-60 Tuesday to pick up its first win.

The Cardinals (1-0, 1-1) cruised from the get-go in the Central Lakes Conference game, bolting out to a commanding 48-28 lead at halftime.

"Having one game under our belt made us more comfortable," said Willmar coach Steve Grove, referring to the Cardinals' season-opening loss at Edina last Friday. "The kids tried to make and create things, but it's a learning process. The biggest thing is that it's a conference win."

The Cardinals shot a blistering 62 percent (34-for-55) from the field and fared even better at the free-throw line, going 16-for-19.

Nearly everyone on the roster got in and the Cardinals finished with a 37-18 advantage on the boards.

Smith grabbed nine rebounds, while brothers Taylor and Ryan Filipek pulled down five rebounds each.

The Cardinals are now off until Friday, when they play Tartan at 7 p.m. in the Breakdown Tip-Off Classic at Marshall High School.
