WILLMAR -- River Lakes' forward Jon Cole picked up a free puck and scored the game-winning goal late in the third period on Monday as the Stars nipped Willmar 2-1 in a first-round game at the Willmar Bus Cup.

Cole jumped on a Willmar turnover near the blue line and flicked a shot that trickled off Leitch's glove at 12:56 to give the Stars a 2-1 lead.

The Stars then fended off a Willmar powerplay over the last 1:57 for the win.

River Lakes plays Marshall at 6 p.m. tonight. Willmar meets Fargo Shanley at 8 p.m.

The game, which counted as a Central Lakes Conference game, boosted the Stars' record to 3-1 in the CLC and 4-3 overall.

Willmar dropped to 1-3 and 3-4, including a 2-0 win over the Stars at Paynesville on Dec. 9.

Willmar outshot the Stars 14-4 in the first period, but the only goal was a breakaway goal by River Lakes junior Jess Engquist.

Cardinal sophomore Gabe Amon's goal just 2:18 into the second frame made it 1-1, but Stars' goalie Tyler Sieben wouldn't be beat again.

"We had the most shots (32-19), but the quality chances were about the same," said Willmar head coach Dan Tollefson. "Their goalie is tough. This was a lot like the first game where it was 1-0 until we scored again late."

Willmar will be without senior forward Rory Schneider today. He received a game misconduct as time ran out in the third period.
