Willmar softball wins 2 of 3 at D-C Invite

DASSEL -- The Willmar Cardinals went 2-1 at the Dassel-Cokato softball invitational on Saturday.

"We got to use a lot of players," said coach Brent Pederson. "It was a good day for us."

The day might be remembered for the varsity debut of eighth-grader Heather Horning. She went 5-for-6 at the plate with a double and three RBI while also making two pitching appearances.

Horning threw the first four innings of the 9-6 win over Dassel-Cokato to open the invite. She left with Willmar down 6-4.

Willmar rallied with four runs in the fifth. Megan Rudie singled in the tying run and Amanda Croonquist hit in the go-ahead score. Hanna Pedersen blanked the Chargers on two hits over the last three innings to get the win.

In game two, Pedersen threw an eight inning four- hitter as Willmar rallied to win 5-4.

Hutch led 4-2 with Willmar up in the top of the seventh. Horning's single was followed by Haylee Hastad's RBI double and then Sarah Kalhoff's run-scoring hit to tie the game.

In the top of the eighth, Alex Linbo walked, stole second and scored on Horning's hard single to left field. Pederson put down the Tigers in order for her second win of the day.

Willmar went to its bench in game three. Lindsey Atchison, a freshman, got the start. It was a rough seven-run first inning as four errors led to seven unearned runs against Holy Family of Victoria, which went on to a 12-6 win.

"Lindsey hung in there for five innings and kept her composure," said Pederson. "That showed a lot."

Haylee Hastad finished with five hits and Rudie and Kalhoff four each. Chelsey Hamann doubles and singled twice plating three runs."
