Fischer, New Ulm shackle Willmar, 6-1

WILLMAR -- New Ulm's Garrett Fischer held Willmar to five hits, handing the Cardinals a 6-1 non-conference baseball loss Monday at Bill Taunton Stadium.

Fischer struck out eight without a walk in seven innings.

Willmar's lone run came in the second inning. John Sawatzky led off with an infield single, then took second on a passed ball, which put him in scoring position for Josh Oesterich's single to right field. The run cut New Ulm's lead to 2-1.

But the Eagles picked up two runs in the third on Zach Hoffman's two-run home run to left-center field, then added two more in the fourth for a 6-1 lead.

The Cardinals collected three hits in the last three innings, but left all three runners on base. Alec Saunders hit a two-out double in the sixth and Matt Odom was left at second base after his leadoff single in the seventh.

Justin Hamann pitched the first three innings and took the loss. He struck out two and walked one. Scott Skaalerud threw the next three innings, allowing two runs on two hits, and Sawatzky pitched the seventh inning.
